Hydrangeas

It's hydrangea season in the Big Woods.  The bouquet on the table is real; the wreath hanging above it is artificial.  They look like they came from the same place; both have blue and white flowers.  The real white ones are oak leaf hydrangeas.  These grow very well in the Big Woods.

We actually have a bush of regular hydrangeas that is blue, and one about five feet away that is pink.  I always thought that the color of the blooms had something to do with the acid in the soil.  Does anyone know if this is true???

Frozen Blueberry Dessert

This has become my favorite summer dessert.

It is so easy to make, and it is handy to have in the house when company comes.

You will need four items:

1 can sweetened condensed milk

1 can crushed pineapple

1- 8 ounce container cool whip

1 can blueberry pie filling

Drain the pineapple...and then,

mix the four items together in a large bowl.

Spread the mixture in a glass container, cover with lid or aluminum foil

and freeze.

Cut into squares and serve.

I have made this with peach pie filling and cherry pie filling.  They are all delicious.

My Sewing Sister froze hers in a cupcake lined muffin pan.  She removed the liners before serving.

This makes individual serving sizes with a fluted edge.

Fred Thompson

      Today's Sunday Fun Read 
 recommendation is obvious if you live in 
 Lawrenceburg, Tennessee.  Hot off the presses
 is the new book, Teaching the Pig to Dance,
 written by Fred Thompson. 

      My family just returned from the bookstore,
 where we purchased our own copy of this new
 book.  My  husband will be present on the
 Lawrenceburg square this Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 where Fred Thompson will be waiting to sign autographs.  This book is mostly about Mr. Thompson's hometown...which just so happens to be our hometown.  Isn't that cool???

     Yes, we all remember Fred Thompson's bid for the presidency.  We were among the many local people who gathered on the Lawrenceburg square to cheer on Mr. Thompson when he announced his candidacy for President.  I will never forget that day, and I hope it is an experience that my children will always remember.  We held our signs of support and cheered and cheered.  It was great fun.

Of course, we were terribly disappointed when that nomination never came to be, but we are still proud to claim Fred Thompson as a local hero.

Wild Roses

We are country people through and through.

I enjoy visiting the city, but I prefer my slow country life.

My husband and I went jeep riding through some of the back roads behind our house a few days ago to see if there was anything interesting to take photos of for my blog.

Voila...

Remember the roses that were beside my bed a few days ago...

I had picked them from the side of the road.

It is the same type of roses that have this old combine completed entangled.

How beautiful.

Something rusted left by the side of the roadway has been made beautiful by these roses.

That's what I love about the country.

Tuna Noodle Casserole

Here's the tuna noodle casserole recipe...

You will need:

     1 can tuna

     small bag noodles

     cream of mushroom soup

     milk

     salt and pepper to taste

     velvetta cheese

     butter or margarine

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Cook noodles according to package and drain.

Butter casserole dish.

Mix soup and 1/2 can milk in a bowl.  Add salt and pepper.

In casserole dish put a layer of noodles, layer soup mixture, sprinkle layer tuna.

Repeat layers.

Top with slices of velvetta cheese.

Bake 45 minutes - 1 hour.

Serve with vegetables or a salad.

Summer at our house means tuna noodle casserole.  This is one of those feel good foods.  It makes for a delicious summertime meal.

Sister Day

Today was Impromtu Sister Day.

We headed to my Lynchburg Sister's pool home to

eat and swim.

First, there was tuna noodle casserole (I'll share a tutorial later), limas, and green beans.

Doesn't this plate look yummy???

My Lynchburg Sister has a way with making things look lovely...even the rolls.

After lunch and a brief rain shower, the pool was ready for us.

Then, there was swimming, lounging, and lots of talking.

It is so nice that the four of us have the summer off from work.

Sorry Nashville Brother that you missed the fun.  Somebody has to work during the summer.  We can only imagine that you are very very busy right now.  We will cook for you another day.

Summer Knitting

Summer for me means time for knitting!!!

This is the dishcloth I almost finished today while waiting on my children at the dentist.

These three dishcloths I finished a few days ago.  I love this pattern.  I have it memorized,

which makes it very relaxing to knit.

These three will soon appear on my shelf at Candy's Memories on our local square.
