Cinnamon Ornaments

It's beginning to smell a lot like Christmas in the Big Woods.
I just love the smell of Cinnamon Ornaments in the house.

These ornaments are super fun and easy to make.
Especially when you make them with someone else.
My daughter helped me with these.

These are the necessary ingredients...
1 cup cinnamon
3/4 cup applesauce
2 Tablespoons white glue
1 Tablespoon pumpkin pie spice, ground nutmeg, or ground cloves
Mix together, then roll out to 1/4 inch using cinnamon to keep the dough
from sticking to your dough board. Cut our with cookie cutters.
Let dry for 24 hours or longer.
Remember to use a small straw or something to make a hole in the top for hanging with thread.

We have so many cookie cutters.
But, we decided to stick with stars, angels, and trees.

I used the stars to decorate this little tree in my kitchen.

I used the trees on my kitchen cabinet doors.

Such an easy and fun Christmas craft.

Hershey Candy Bar Cake

Is this my favorite cake?...
Yes, it is!
I love to make this cake, and I love to eat this cake!!!!!!

This has to be the easiest cake icing ever to both make and spread.
I sometimes use this icing on cakes without the candy bars.

This particular cake is made using a Betty Crocker Chocolate Fudge Cake mix
that I made following the directions on the box.

The icing includes the following ingredients:
8 oz. softened cream cheese
1 cup confectioners sugar
1/2 cup sugar
8 oz. Container CoolWhip
Mix together with a mixer until smooth.

The icing goes on beautifully, then I shave one large 4.4 oz. Hershey bar and sprinkle all over the cake.
Refrigerate until ready to eat and refrigerate any left overs.

I usually make this cake at Christmas, but this year I waited
and made it for my daughter’s 22nd birthday, which is today!
Wow, she was just a little girl when I started this blog, and this cake was one of my very first post. Funny how I still think of her as that same little girl.

Enjoy!

Hallelujah Tree

A few years ago, my daughter and I decided to decorate one of our cedar trees for the birds.
We called it our Hallelujah tree.
The Hallelujah tree has now grown tall and spindly and will no longer work for a bird tree.

This year, we decided to decorate a new tree that I had planted a few years ago outside of my kitchen window.
It was the perfect size for a Bird Tree.
If nothing else, it made for some great pictures.

Our decorations came from leftover Christmas foods.
We cut out circles from stale bread, spread on egg whites, then sprinkled on bird seed.
A hole was made in the top of the bread with a straw, and then the bread treats were baked in a 200 degree oven for about 30 minutes.
The next day, we added string for hanging.

We sliced a few oranges that were beginning to go bad and baked these on a cookie rack in the oven for about 3 hours at 200 degrees.
I was just as happy with the oranges that we did not bake, but simply sliced and threaded on a string.

We made several stringers with leftover store bought popcorn, oranges, cranberries, and dried fruit from a trail mix.
These were easily strung with a large needle and some heavy red thread.

The decorations that were probably the most fun to make were the bird seed creations.  We mixed 2 packages unflavored gelatin with 1 cup hot water.  Then, we added 6 tablespoons light corn syrup and 1 1/2 cups plain flour.
Last we added 8 cups of bird seed.
This gooey concoction was put in cookie cutters and muffin tins to create shapes to hang on the tree.
We used a straw to add a hole to the top of the cookie cutter ornaments.
The muffin time ornaments, we placed a sting in the middle of the goo and let them dry with the string inside.  These just needed to
dry overnight.

I love that I can see this tree from my kitchen window. Now, we are just waiting for the birds to come and enjoy!

Christmas 2017

It's Christmas in the Big Woods.  We have just finished celebrating a wonderful Christmas.  I thought I would share with you a few of the highlights from our home.
I was delighted when my husband decided to have this sign designed for the entrance to the Big Woods.  He simply took a picture of what we wanted to our local Sign company, and they were able to create exactly what we wanted.

Our cat, Gus, has kept an eye out every day for Santa.
Santa is definitely hard to spot among all the trees.

I have been adding to my buffalo check collection this year.  The place mats are a new addition.  I was lucky to find them at our local Big Lots!

I have been collecting Santa Clauses for several years.  There are a few on this table from my childhood.  Several of these have special stories that go along with them of the people who gave them to me.

We have had a great time decorating this year.
There seems to be lots of cottage style decorations everywhere you shop these days.

Lots of fresh and artificial holly this year for decorating inside and out.

My daughter created these hanging wreaths for me last Christmas by very patiently forming a long piece of thin greenery into a circle and adding ribbon.  I just used a thumbtack to attach them to the back of my cabinet doors.

This very cute star was made by my Lynchburg Sister from a folding ruler.  She sells these in her booth at the Spotted Cow just off our downtown square.

Merry Christmas to all!!!

Christmas Pillow

My daughter's Christmas pillow is finally finished.
Not bad, I would say...three days after Christmas.
She requested this pillow about a week before Black Friday.
We got all the stuff, and I quickly began working on it; but then, the Christmas season hit.
There just never seemed to be any time.

That's ok, we had great fun along the way.
It was fun picking out the fabrics.

My daughter enjoyed deciding which order the squares should be sewn together.

She chose the font and printed off the words for me.
Then, I enjoyed embroidering them onto the fabric.

This is the stage where our project stalled.
Once I put them in the lap quilting frame, I really liked the way it looked.

So, I used it as a Christmas decoration, while it waited to be finished.

I am proud of the finished product.
I am mostly proud that I actually finished it.
It has been a while since I tackled a project this complicated.
If you want to try one, you can find the directions here:

I hope she will enjoy it for many years to come.
