Miller's Nursery

Some things in life are just too good to be true...

Such is the case with Miller's Nursery.
Mr. Miller opened his nursery last year.
He grows everything in his greenhouse from seed.

His greenhouse is packed full of beautiful, healthy, gorgeous plants and flowers.
It is a site to behold.
Everything you see here came from that greenhouse.

The best part is this nursery is only 5 minutes from my house.
And...his prices are very reasonable.
Miller's Nursery is
located between Pulaski and Lawrenceburg, Tennessee on the new bypass.

Wild Violas

These tiny tiny violas were blooming in the field beside our favorite swing.
Just the right thing for this tiny, tiny bucket...

Flowers in the Woods

We have had no winter in the Big Woods this year.
Everyone keeps thinking it is still coming...but, it is now March and the temperatures are in the 70's.  I have had fun taking random pictures around the yard this week.  Enjoy!

Blue and White

Today has been blue and white day.
I have been cleaning, moving, and rearranging the blue and white dishes in my kitchen.

The dishes I had in this cabinet were blending in with the white I decided it was time for a change.

One thing led to another, and I began rearranging and cleaning the entire kitchen.

Purple seems to be the theme of the flowers this spring in the Big Woods.  I decided to accent this bucket with a little ribbon.  It won't be long before the ground and the trees will be green with no signs of winter!!!

The week is suppose to be beautiful...we are so lucky.

How do you like these cute bottles???
I think that I will enjoy taking many pictures of many flowers in these bottles...
Happy Spring!!!

Pansys and Violas

These are two of my most favorite flowers...pansys and violas.
We have had some beautiful Spring days to work outdoors.
This is my work table.

I had no intentions of taking these pictures when I began working...but, sometimes you just notice how beautiful the simple things are!!!

Today, I have had great fun playing outdoors.
This little viola has been wrapped in parchment paper...just the right thing to bring out the violet colors.

I tried placing it in different settings around the Big Woods to see where the photographs looked their best.

I am not quite sure which one is my favorite.
What do you think?

Hanging Viola Pots

The weather in the Big Woods has been lovely this weekend.  The sun has been shining and calling me to the outdoors.

I have now replaced my hanging red kerosene lanterns with these viola pots.  They were very simple to make with a little jute...and I think I will quite enjoy them hanging from my front porch.

Pound Cake

When I was growing up, my best friend had the neatest Grandmother.
Now, let me just say...I had the world's best Grandmother.  I would put my Grandma up against anybody's anyday...I miss her greatly.
But my friend had the next best Grandmother.
She always made me feel so welcome in her home.

And, she could cook.
I will always think of her as trying new things first.
It was at her house that I ate pizza for the first time...homemade.
It was at her house that I ate tacos for the first time.  I thought those tacos were the best thing I had ever tasted.

When I got married...almost 25 years ago, her daughter gave me a recipe box that contained some of Ms. Vesta's recipes.  Although I have used most of these recipes several times, there was one that I had never tried that was for a pound cake.

I decided to try it this week.
While I was mixing up the cake, I became concerned that there were no eggs, no baking soda or baking powder in this cake...I was doubting the cake.
I continued to doubt after it was done...because, as you can see in the picture, it did not rise very much.
I cut up the cake into pieces and put it in a tupperware container thinking it would never be eaten.

The next day...I noticed over half the cake was missing.  I soon learned my son was the culprit.
He proclaimed this cake as one of the best he had ever eaten.  How could I have doubted Ms. Vesta???
The cake is now gone, and I continue to crave another piece.

You will need:
2 sticks butter or oleo (butter is recommended)
1/4 cup Crisco
3 cups sugar
3 cups all purpose flour
1 cup sweet milk
1 Tablespoon vanilla (or 2 teaspoons vanilla and 1 teaspoon almond)

Let the butter or oleo soften and then beat well.

Beat in the sugar.

Add the liquids alternating with the flour, beating well...end with flour.

Pour into a well greased and floured bundt pan and bake for 1 hour 15 minutes or until done.
